Thailand pauses 49 data centre builds and prepares new rules

Row of server racks on a raised floor in a data hall

In early September, the Thai government paused construction on about 49 data centre projects and held back more than 117 awaiting approval, so it could draft clear minimum standards first. The government stressed it was not trying to block investment.

The standards cover location and land use, separation from neighbours, safety, electrical systems, backup fuel storage, water management and the environment.

The latest news from late October: the new criteria are heading to Cabinet, existing data centres will get about a year to comply, and new applications are expected to open in early 2027.

Our take: as rules on power, safety and backup systems get stricter, the services under the floor need more careful planning too. A raised floor with enough void height and easy-to-lift panels lets you upgrade or inspect services without stripping out the room.

Is your project affected, or are you getting a room ready for the new rules? Talk to us on LINE @684ubper or Page Messenger, and see more about raised floors at anbs.co.th.
