Thailand creates a separate building category for data centres

News for anyone working on buildings. On 1 October 2026, Thailand's data centre policy committee approved a separate legal building category for data centres, split into five size tiers by power use, from up to 1 MW to over 200 MW.

The draft rules cover safety, structural design, water reserves and backup fuel tanks, with a transition period for existing operators. As of 15 October a subcommittee was still reviewing the draft minimum requirements, so nothing is final yet.

Our take: clearer structural rules mean floor loads, void height and cable routes get planned earlier. If you are designing an IT or control room, keep an eye on the final version. We will post a summary once it is published.
